Önceden tanımadığınız ve sizi seveceğinden de emin olmadığınız insanlarla ıssız bir dağ evinde kalsanız nasıl olurdu?

Goodnight Mommy filminden de tanıdığımız Veronika Franz, Severin Fiala ikilisinin yönettiği Lodge / Mürit, Sergio Casci’nin kaleminden çıkmış 2019 yapımı bir film. Başrollerinde Riley Keough, Alicia Silverstone, Richard Armitage ve Jaeden Martell’ın yer aldığı film, psikolojik gerilim türünün güzel örneklerinden biri. Filmi ayrıntılı inceleyeceğimiz yazının geri kalanı spoiler içermektedir.

What if you need to stay with someone which you didn’t know before and also you’re not sure that they’re going to like you?

Lodge; which is directed by Veronika Franz, Severin Fiala, the duo we know from Goodnight Mommy, is a movie made in 2019. The scenario is written by Sergio Casci. Starring Riley Keough, Alicia Silverstone, Richard Armitage and Jaeden Martell, the movie is one of the best examples of the psychological thriller genre. Parçalanacak olan bir aile ve bu aileye dahil olacak bir başkası… The Lodge, bir aile trajedisi gibi başlasa da öyle devam etmiyor ve bizi; içinde din, tarikat ve psikolojik rahatsızlığın da bulunduğu bir gerilime sürüklüyor.

İlk başta Alicia Silverstone’un canlandırdığı Laura karakterinin boşanma arifesinde olduğundan ötürü içinde bulunduğu bunalımı izliyoruz. Richard’tan ayrılacak olan (Richard Armitage) Laura, hem çocuklarını babalarının yanına bırakmak hem de son kez konuşmak üzere eşinin yanına gidiyor. Kendisi hala umutlu olsa bile eşi, aralarındaki ilişkiyi kafasında tamamen bitirmiş ve hayatına başkasını almıştır. Eşinin ‘Artık boşanalım.’ demesi bardağı taşıran son damla olur, Laura yüzünde silik bir ifadeyle derhal kendi evine gider. Hiçbir şey olmamışçasına evindeki bazı eşyaların yerlerini düzeltir, masasındaki kırmızı şaraptan kadehine doldurup bir yudum alır ve sanki anahtarını arıyormuşçasına çantasından çıkardığı silahla kendini tereddüt etmeden öldürür. Filmin bu sahnesi beni ve sanıyorum ki izleyen herkesi en çok sarsan sahne olmuştu.

Annelerinin ölümünden Aiden (Jaeden Martell) ve Mia (Lia McHugh) oldukça etkilenir. Mia, annesinin öldüğü gün tıpkı annesi gibi giydirdiği oyuncak bebeğine sıkı sıkıya bağlanır ve bir nevi onu bir put haline getirir.

Filmin ilerleyen dakikalarında babanın çocukları ve sevgilisini kaynaştırması için bir çaba içerisine girdiğini görürüz. Hatta bunu kış tatili için dağ evinde beraber kalarak oldukça keskin bir şekilde yapmaya karar verir. Fakat burada bir sorun vardır, iş için ayrılmak zorunda olduğundan çocuklar ve sevgilisi Grace (Riley Keough) tek başlarına kalacaklardır. Her ne kadar zor bir durum olsa da sırf çocuklarla kaynaşmak adına Grace bu teklifi kabul eder.

Burada filmin diğer dikkat çeken noktası devreye girer: Grace’in babası dini bir tarikat lideridir ve kendisiyle birlikte birçok inananın toplu intihar etmesine sebep olmuştur. Tek kurtulansa kızı Grace’tir. Bu olayın travmasından ötürü Grace sürekli ilaç kullanmak zorundadır. Dağ evine gitmeden önce çocuklar bu gerçeği babalarının yazdığı gazete yazılarından öğrenirler.

Dağ evine giderkenki yol, dağ evinin bulunduğu soğuk, karlı ve ıssız bölge mekan bakımından bana sık sık The Shining’i anımsattı. Aynı zamanda Grace’in akıl hastalığından muzdarip olması ve Johnny’nin de bir bağımlı olması benzer öğeler olarak yorumlanabilir.

Dağ evine vardıklarından itibaren Grace her ne kadar çocuklarla yakınlaşmak istese bile; çocukların ona karşı her daim mesafeli, hatta nefret dolu olduklarını görürüz. Bu nefretin arkasında Grace’in babalarıyla olan ilişkisinin annesinin ölümüne sebebiyet verdiği düşüncesi yatar. Çoğu sahnede klostrofobik ve soğuk bir alan olarak yansıtılan evde Grace ve çocuklar arasında bitmek bilmeyen bir gerilim hakimdir. En sonunda bu gerilim bir intikam hamlesine dönüşür. Burada söylemem gerekirse çocukların duyduğu kinin bu noktaya geleceğini beklemiyordum. Hatta eşyaların ortadan yok olmasının, tıpkı Aiden’ın da söylediği gibi Grace’in başının altından çıktığını düşünmüştüm. Fakat hikayenin bu noktasında hiç de basite kaçılmamış. Tam tersine bir çocuktan beklemeyeceğimiz bir kini bize film boyunca ağır ağır gösterdiler. Tabii ki zamanla işler çocukların tahmin edeceğinden farklı bir boyuta geliyor, intikam almak istedikleri kişi aslında paramparça bir ruh haline bürünüyor. Annelerinin ölümü ne kadar ani ve beklenmedikse, kendi ölümleri o kadar göz göre göre ve ağır bir şekilde gerçekleşiyor.

Filmin 6.0'lık IMDb puanını biraz düşük bulmakla birlikte baba karakterinin bu kadar pasif ve az yansıtılmasını beklemiyordum. Eğer siz de slow-burn gerilim filmlerini seviyorsanız The Lodge tam size göre. Keyifli seyirler!

A family that will fall apart and someone else that will be included in this family… Even though The Lodge started out like a family tragedy, it does not continue like that. It drugs us to a psychological thriller which contains religion, sect and mental illness.

At first, we watch the melancholia of Laura, played by Alicia Silverstone, because she is on the eve of divorce. Laura, who is going to break up with her husband, she goes to her husband for to leave the children with their father and to talk to him for the last time. Even though she is still hopeful, her husband has completely finished the relationship between them in his mind and has taken someone else into his life. When he said ‘Let’s get divorce.’ she couldn’t stand it anymore and went to her home with a faint expression on her face. She changes the place of some of the furniture in the house as if nothing had happened, pours a glass of red wine on her table, takes a sip, and kills herself without hesitation with the gun she pulled out of her bag, as if searching for her key. I suppose this scene of the movie was the one that shook me most and everyone who watched it.

Aiden (Jaeden Martell) and Mia (Lia McHugh) were struck by their mother’s death. Mia is tightly attached to the doll that she dressed like her mother on the day she died, and somehow turns her into a tin god.

Later in the movie, we see that the father makes an effort to merge his children and his lover. He even decides to do this very sharply, staying together at the chalet for winter vacation. But there is a problem here, as he has to leave for work, the children and his girlfriend, Grace (Riley Keough), will be alone. Despite the difficult situation, Grace accepts this offer to mingle with the children.

This is where the film’s other highlight comes into play: Grace’s father was a religious cult leader, and he and many believers committed mass suicide with him. The only survivor was her daughter Grace. Because of the trauma of this incident, Grace has to take medication all the time. Before going to the chalet, the children learn this fact from newspaper articles written by their father.

The road to the chalet, the cold, snowy and desolate area where the chalet is located reminded me of The Shining in terms of space. At the same time, Grace’s suffering from mental illness and Johnny’s being an addict can be interpreted as similar elements.

Even though Grace wanted to get close to the children from the moment they arrived at the chalet; we see that children were always distant, even hateful towards her. Behind this hatred is the thought that Grace’s relationship with their fathers caused the death of their mother. The house is projected as a claustrophobic and cold space in most scenes, and there is an unending tension between Grace and the children. Eventually, this tension turns into a revenge move. To put it here, I didn’t expect the hatred of the children would reach this point. I even thought that the disappearance of the things was Grace’s job , just as Aiden had said. But at this point in the story, it is not at all simple. On the contrary, they showed us slowly a grudge that we would not expect from a child throughout the film. Of course, over time, things become different than what the children would imagine, the person they want to revenge actually gets into a shattered mood. The more sudden and unexpected the death of their mother, the more visibly and slowly their own deaths happen.

Although I found the movie’s IMDb score of 6.0 a little low, I did not expect the father character to be so passive and under-reflected. If you like slow-burn thriller movies, The Lodge may be perfect for you. Have a Good Time!
